Hosted by Lieutenant. Governor Diane Denish and sponsored by the New Mexico Coalition for Financial Education, Jump$tart (stet) New Mexico and the New Mexico Securities Division, the day-long conference will highlight an array of programs aimed at improving money management skills for New Mexicans of all ages. “As we head into an uncertain national economy, it’s more important than ever that people learn to be wise consumers. Knowing how to save and spend wisely – not to mention avoiding lending scams and outright cons – can help people get ahead rather than just get by,” said Lt. Gov. Denish. The day’s events include information on managing personal finances, mortgage lending and credit management, as well as the risks posed by predatory lending, identity theft and other types of fraud. The full agenda and a registration form is available on the Coalition for Financial Education website, www.nmfined.org. “Knowing how to manage credit prudently and save and invest for the future is key to success in today’s world,” said Coalition Chairperson Gena Wilimitis. “This event will bring together educators, business people and policy makers from all across the state to talk about how we can raise the level of financial literacy here in New Mexico.” The workshops and presentations include information on financial education resources available for teachers, working adults and senior citizens. Featured speakers include Lt. Gov. Denish, Attorney General Gary King, and educator, author and motivational speaker Shirley Garrett. At the day’s luncheon, Tom Hoenig, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, will provide an overview on the current state and future prospects for the U.S. economy. The Lt. Governor’s Summit on Financial Education will be held at the Albuquerque Marriott, 2101 Louisiana Blvd., on Monday April 21. Admission to the various workshops and presentations is free and open to the public. Reservations are required for the luncheon with the keynote speech by Lt. Gov. Denish.
