THE NEW MEXICO COALITION FOR FINANCIAL EDUCATION

SPRING 2008 SCHEDULE

Young people today face a bewildering array of financial choices.  Whether entering the work force directly out of high school, going into military service, or pursuing additional educational opportunities, the new graduate must make decisions that can affect his or her life for years to come.

The Focus on the Future program equips high school students with the tools they need to make appropriate decisions regarding saving, investing, and the prudent use of credit.

Focus on the Future is a special event presented by local community volunteers who work with students during regular school hours in the classroom.  In the two-hour program, students get practical guidance on:

  • Establishing a banking relationship
  • Creating a monthly budget
  • Obtaining basic insurance coverage
  • Managing credit card debt
  • Buying a home
  • Saving and investing

THE PROGRAM

  • Budgeting
  • Investing
  • Savings and Banking
  • Credit and Credit Management
  • Home Buying

FOCUS COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

Focus on the Future volunteers include bankers, insurance brokers, investment advisers, CPAs and other financial professionals.  As residents of the local community and often graduates of the high school they’re visiting, the Focus volunteers provide valuable role models for young people considering a career in the financial services industry.

WHO ARE WE?

Focus Foundation is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to forming partnerships between New Mexico’s schools and our state’s business community to raise the ‘financial IQ’ of graduating high school seniors.  For nearly 20 years, we have been working with high school students to provide them with the tools they need to spend wisely, manage their use of credit, and save and invest for their futures.

More than 90,000 New Mexico high school students have participated in the project since its creation.

The two secrets of our success are:

  • First, our use of a format that engages students and encourages a lively discussion.
  • Second, our teams of financial professionals from the local community, who communicate their own enthusiasm for their chosen fields.

During the course of the just completed semester, 26 Focus presentations reached approximately 8,000 students in various school districts throughout New Mexico.  There were 45 presentations given during the semester.  New school districts added in this past semester included Cuba, Kirtland, Santa Theresa and Gadsden.

A revised and updated student workbook was introduced at the beginning of the fall semester, with new sections added covering identity theft, trusts, budgeting and financial planning.  The workbook is a collaborative effort that included input from the New Mexico Securities Division, PNM (Public Service Company of New Mexico), Focus Foundation board members and several of our Focus volunteers

The workbook, like the presentation it accompanies, emphasizes the importance of establishing lasting relationships with financial professionals, especially in the areas of banking, insurance, credit management, home buying and investing.
